split pea crisps


Split Pea Crisps (adapted from here)

  • 1-2c. dried split peas (I’ve only used yellow so far but will try green)
  • 5-7c. water
  • 3T. olive oil
  • 3T. nutritional yeast
  • salt to taste

Pour your split peas into a large bowl.  Cover with water.  You want about 2 inches of water over the split peas.  Soak for 4 hours.  Drain and pour split peas out onto a dishtowel.  Pat dry.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.  Add in the split peas and stir to coat.  Add the salt and stir.  Add the yeast and stir.  Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the peas have browned and crisped (taste test), about 10 or so minutes.  Cool and devour!

I’m looking forward to trying variations of these – green peas, garlic, different spices.  But we love them!  They’d be killer on top of a salad but they’re awesome just for snacking, too.  Let me know if you try them and what varieties you come up with!
