chocolate shake

I crave milkshakes in the summertime, especially on roadtrips, but I barely ever buy them.  The other weekend I was driving back from Michigan and decided to stop at McDonalds and get a chocolate milkshake.  I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had one!  The shake was delicious – sweet and cold – and I sucked it down superfast.  And then less than 30 minutes later I was calling Dave to help keep me awake.  The sugar coma hit hard and I was really struggling not to fall asleep!

Here’s a shake that is cold and chocolatey but won’t put you in a sugar coma.

Stay Awake Chocolate Shake

  • 1 banana, chopped in large pieces and frozen
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • 1c. milk (may need more)
  • 2T. unsweetened cocoa powder

Throw all the ingredients in the blender and blend til smooth.  Add more milk as necessary to get it to blend.  Serve drizzled with chocolate syrup.  Makes 1 large shake.

What’s your favorite summertime treat?

  1. Kim- Your dad is big on milkshakes too- right? I remember visiting your house as a kid one summer and being offered (and enjoying!) a small vanilla milkshake before bed.

John and I have ice cream almost every night after the kids go to bed. Our normal right now is vanilla with Reese’s peanut butter sauce and Reese’s chocolate peanut butter sauce too. We call it our “crack”. So delicious!

  2. I like making banana “fro-yo”…frozen banana, blended in a food processor or blender until it’s frozen yogurt consistency! (you can add a little milk or non-dairy milk if you need to, to smooth it out)…I like to add peanut butter and unsweetened cocoa powder when I’m in the mood for choc-pb “ice cream”. 🙂
