Kim encouraged me (Dave) to do a guest post on this, so here we go…
I’m 29 and wearing braces!
You’d think I would have gotten them sooner. When I was younger I had the chance, but I was pretty insecure and didn’t want to draw attention to myself.
So, how’s it going so far? Well, for one I feel like I’ve joined some sort of club. People are like, “Oh, I remember when I had braces…this part of it was painful, that part of it was difficult, etc.” Instant orthodontic bonding.
Thankfully, it hasn’t been too painful so far. The tightening is where it gets you, but even that has been bearable. I have noticed some irritation on the inside of my mouth from where the brackets rub against it, but thankfully the pain there seems to be subsiding.
I think the two biggest adjustments have come in the areas of:
With eating, it’s been about eating softer foods (especially early on) and the lovely job of getting food unstuck.
With meeting, it’s been about having the same conversation over and over again:
Them: “Oh, you got braces!”
Me: “Yeah, I’ve had them for a little while now. I feel like I’m in high school or something, etc.”
It’s kind of hard to hide braces, so I don’t mind having the conversation at all. I considered invisible braces, but they tend to be more expensive and don’t do as good of a job for some people.
The good news: I should have them off 11 to 17 months from now, which isn’t too long!
Sometimes when I talk to people I wonder, “Are people just staring at my braces?” But I think that braces have been a bigger adjustment for me then they have been for others. And I guess it’s becoming more and more normal to wear them at later stages in life.
So, there you have it!
Have you had braces? What was your experience like?
