guest post: braces!

Kim encouraged me (Dave) to do a guest post on this, so here we go…

I’m 29 and wearing braces!

You’d think I would have gotten them sooner. When I was younger I had the chance, but I was pretty insecure and didn’t want to draw attention to myself.

So, how’s it going so far? Well, for one I feel like I’ve joined some sort of club. People are like, “Oh, I remember when I had braces…this part of it was painful, that part of it was difficult, etc.” Instant orthodontic bonding.

Thankfully, it hasn’t been too painful so far. The tightening is where it gets you, but even that has been bearable. I have noticed some irritation on the inside of my mouth from where the brackets rub against it, but thankfully the pain there seems to be subsiding.

I think the two biggest adjustments have come in the areas of:

  1. Eating
  2. Meeting

With eating, it’s been about eating softer foods (especially early on) and the lovely job of getting food unstuck.

With meeting, it’s been about having the same conversation over and over again:

Them: “Oh, you got braces!”

Me: “Yeah, I’ve had them for a little while now. I feel like I’m in high school or something, etc.”

It’s kind of hard to hide braces, so I don’t mind having the conversation at all. I considered invisible braces, but they tend to be more expensive and don’t do as good of a job for some people.

The good news: I should have them off 11 to 17 months from now, which isn’t too long!

Sometimes when I talk to people I wonder, “Are people just staring at my braces?” But I think that braces have been a bigger adjustment for me then they have been for others. And I guess it’s becoming more and more normal to wear them at later stages in life.

So, there you have it!

Have you had braces? What was your experience like?

  1. I didn’t get braces until I was 16…and didn’t get them off until a month before my 18th birthday! It was pretty awful, ha…I had to pay extra to have them digitally removed from my senior pictures…I was the only one on the varsity soccer team who had to wear a mouth guard because of the braces…I was the only one over the age of 12 at the orthodontist’s office. 🙂 But, I’m glad I got them…although…I should have worn my retainers for more than just two months after getting them off 😉

    1. Ah yes, the retainer. That adventure is yet to come…

That’s crazy you could have them digitally removed in your pictures!

  2. I just had braces. I got them off 2 weeks before Miles was born! I hated having them as an adult… awkward! But they were SO worth it. I love my new smile.

  3. I had braces my freshman-sophmore year of high school. Unfortunately once I got them off, I never wanted to wear my retainer and my teeth have moved ever so slightly. Totally want to get invisilign to fix them again.

  4. I had them 8th grade-freshman year of high school. If your brackets are still causing irritation in your mouth, your orthodontist should be able to give you some soft wax to stick over them – it helped for me.

And all this time later, I still try to remember to wear my retainers overnight once a week.

Hope it’s a quick and relatively painless journey for you 🙂

  5. I am so happy you posted this! My husband wants to get braces and is about Dave’s age. I bet he would get the same reaction. People are just curious and want to talk – since so many have had them! I had them soph and jr year of high school.
