Saturday I ran my first race since having Leo! Dave and I ran the W.O.O.F. race two years ago (I did the 16 mile and Dave the 5). We loved it then and I loved it again! It’s an awesome race because it’s small, it’s cheap, and it’s really laid-back. Runners are running because they love it, not to impress anybody. The volunteers are awesome and the post-race food is homemade and delicious. The course is gorgeous – 5 miles through the woods, with only a few pauses where you cross a park road – and includes a run past the buffalo and over a hay bale “mountain”. Definitely a great race!
We stayed with friends Friday night and had a great time eating dinner with them and playing Rummikub. We got to bed by 10pm, so I had plenty of time to sleep! The race didn’t start til 10am, so Saturday morning I got up and fed Leo at 6, then went back to sleep til almost 8. Glorious! Had oatmeal and half a cup of coffee and then headed over to the park. It was cool out – in the low 40s – but not cold. Still, we had Leo really bundled!
I promise there is a baby under there.
I picked up my race bib and we huddled by the fireplace in the shelter!
Our friends came to the park, too (with their little girl, Mylin), and they watched the start of the race.
I started off doing 9:30/miles, but started dropping off to a slower pace around mile 3. By this time I was starting to feel tired and I also was singing hallelujahs in my head that I signed up for the 5 mile race and not the 16. At mile 4 a girl about my same age passed me and I didn’t have the energy to keep up with her. I definitely slowed way down during the last 2 miles. Pacing = fail.
I finished in 54:48, 10:20 avg. pace. and I was tired!
We headed to the post-race food and picked up a couple things to share among the group (vegetable soup, cornbread, a bison burger, chocolate chip cookie). I was definitely a little sad with my time (I had hoped to finish around 50 minutes) but all in all had a really great time and really enjoyed being out on the trails and racing again!
Dave had fun, too – he got to hang out with friends and a super smiley Leo!
So there it is – my first race post-Leo. Yes, I am already researching what I can sign up for next…
